The Sombrero journey began in the summer of 1984, building on a rich family tradition that dates back to the late 1960s. Our founder and CEO, Javier, grew up immersed in the restaurant industry, learning the craft of authentic Mexican cooking at his parents’ original Sombrero location in San Diego’s College Area. After completing school and starting a family, he seized the opportunity to open his own vision of Sombrero Mexican Food—a quick-serve restaurant that stayed true to its roots by preserving traditional recipes, ensuring high-quality ingredients, and delivering genuine, friendly service.

Today, Sombrero Mexican Food has grown to 15 locations across San Diego County and beyond, yet our commitment remains unchanged. We take pride in preparing every dish from scratch, using premium meats, farm-fresh produce, locally made tortillas, and a signature blend of spices. Whether it’s our signature Grilled Angus Carne Asada, our famous over one-and-a-half-pound “Special Burrito” Jumbo Deluxe, or our freshly made Chile Rellenos, Bowls & Salads, every bite embodies the heart of San Diego-style Mexican cuisine.
